Tree Fundraiser!

Mark your calendars for a special Tree Fundraiser organized by Chef Steve on Friday, August 23, 6 to 8 pm, which for only $40 will include a Chef Steve feast and an open bar!

Thanks to your help, in the past two years we've planted a staggering 48 street trees in Broadway Fillmore, completing the street tree canopy along five blocks of Peckham Street and a block of Memorial Drive.

We're now turning our attention to the future Frank X. Schwab Square, named for the Buffalo mayor in the 1920s who stood up to the KKK and the Prohibition agents, across the street from Eugene V. Debs Hall, with a goal of planting *at least* 15 native shade trees in late October.

We've made huge progress in re-treeing Broadway Fillmore. Let's keep it going!

Jane's Talk: How Buffalo Gave Wings to the World

Please join us at Eugene V. Debs Hall for Jane’s Talk: How Buffalo Gave Wings to the World, on Tuesday, May 21, 6 pm, in which we will explore two seemingly unrelated topics: the true origins of the Buffalo wing and the birth of Buffalo's—and America's—aviation industry.

We're proud to host three speakers for this event: Marc Moscato of Buffalo Bike Tours, Lina-Brown Young of John Young's Original Mumbo Sauce, and Chuck Banas, local urbanist and aviation history expert.

We'll learn about the contested claims about the invention of the Buffalo wing, and learn more about the people and places that represent Buffalo's largest ever industry: aircraft manufacturing. Plus, we'll be able to sample Lina's acclaimed mumbo wings, which will be out at 6 pm sharp.

Doors open at 6 pm, with presentations beginning at 7 pm. Jane's Talk, modeled after the international Jane's Walk in honor of urbanist Jane Jacobs, is our ongoing speaker series on topics related to cities and the human habitat.

Broadway Fillmore Tour de Progress

Chris Hawley, in collaboration with the Central Terminal Neighborhood Association and Buffalo Bike Tours, invites you to join this bicycle tour of Broadway Fillmore, a neighborhood rich in history and seeing the beginnings of a vibrant transformation. Historically a stronghold of the Polish and African American communities, Broadway Fillmore's cultural tapestry is growing, shaped by a wave of immigrants, refugees, and newcomers from across the globe.

As we pedal through its streets, Hawley will offer an insider's perspective on how the neighborhood is changing and growing. From bustling new businesses to cherished landmarks, we'll explore the rich fabric of Broadway Fillmore, stopping at key points along the way to delve into new community initiatives and little-known projects shaping its future.

Admission is free but a $20 donation is accepted for those who can afford it (nobody will be turned away for lack of funds). Bike rentals are available for an additional $20.

Meeting at Eugene V. Debs Hall, 483 Peckham Street, we'll delve into the heart of Broadway Fillmore, venturing inside several locations including Torn Space Theater, Buffalo Brewing Company, the Eckhardt Building, and the Fillmore Farms container garden.

Join us on Saturday, May 18, at 11 am for an immersive experience that celebrates the past, embraces the present, and envisions the future of Broadway Fillmore.

Jane's Talk: Vaux Revival

Jane's Talk: Vaux Revival

Please join us at Eugene V. Debs Hall for Jane’s Talk: Vaux Revival on Tuesday, April 23, 6 pm, in which we will explore the significance of Calvert Vaux, the lesser known partner of Frederick Law Olmsted and co-designer of Buffalo's park and parkway system.

We're proud to host two speakers for this event. Frank Kowsky, SUNY Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Buffalo State University and author of Country, Park, and City: The Architecture and Life of Calvert Vaux, will tell us everything we ever wanted to know about Calvert Vaux. Brandon Kennedy, lead preservationist at Preservation Buffalo Niagara (PBN), will update us about PBN's efforts to save the Vaux Barn, 1119 Genesee Street--the sole remaining Buffalo structure designed by Vaux.

Finally, we'll have a discussion about a prospect that has been successfully pursued elsewhere but has long eluded Buffalo: reconstructing Vaux's lost works. Can Buffalo do it?

Doors open at 6 pm, with presentations beginning at 7 pm. Jane's Talk, modeled after the international Jane's Walk in honor of urbanist Jane Jacobs, is our ongoing speaker series on topics related to cities and the human habitat.
